BACK in the summer of 2003, Alastair Campbell, then in his dying days as Tony Blair's spin doctor, set out to humiliate the BBC. Even though he sanitises his jihad against the corporation in his diaries, he writes of 'nailing' [Andrew] Gilligan, a BBC journalist whose report had lit his fuse wire. With characteristic profanity, another entry reveals that he intends to 'f*** Gilligan'.
What he tried to do to Mr Gilligan he extended to the entire BBC. After Mr Gilligan had alleged - correctly as it has transpired - that the Government had misled us over Iraqi weapons of mass destruction, Mr Campbell famously berated the BBC in an appearance before a House of Commons committee, and later during a Channel Four interview.See the full content of this document
