As casting decisions go, it seemed a pretty unlikely one. Jon Voight, the star of such gritty films as Midnight Cowboy and Deliverance is playing none other than Pope John Paul II in a TV film of the late Pontiff. 'In truth,' says Voight, 'the Pope and I had quite a few similarities. He was Polish and I have Slavic blood, so there is some physical similarity.

'I listened to his voice and there were similarities there, too, and then I listened to what he was saying and I liked it. He was a poet and his words were always well-considered, so I thought to myself, "I'm the fellow to do this." I also heard that at one point he wanted me to play him.'
