BOASTS from Gordon Brown that Britain was 'better placed' to withstand the world financial storm have never looked more hollow. Two of our leading trading partners have now managed to struggle their way out of recession while we remain steeped in gloom.

That said, however, the tentative recoveries in Germany and France are unquestionably good news for our economy. These are two of our biggest trading partners, together accounting for almost a fifth of our export earnings last year.
