Summary
WIGAN chairman Dave Whelan last night inadvertently revealed an alleged illegal approach to Roberto Martinez by Celtic. The Parkhead club were never granted permission to speak to the Spaniard while he was at Swansea as they searched for Gordon Strachan's successor. Wigan won the day when they agreed compensation with the Welsh club for their former player, but Whelan risked the wrath of the Parkhead outfit by claiming the Glasgow club spoke to Martinez -- though the new Latics boss refused to confirm the allegation. Whelan, parading Martinez as Steve Bruce's successor at the JJB Stadium, said: 'Celtic had a very big interest in Roberto and were really, really disappointed when they didn't get him. I talked to Roberto about it when I first spoke to him about our vacancy.
'I said: "You know Celtic want you, don't you?" Straight away, he said: "I know. They have already approached me. But don't worry, there's only one club I'm interested in going to, and that's Wigan". That set my mind at rest. It was what I wanted to hear.' Martinez refused to be drawn on whether he had spoken to Celtic but claimed Wigan were the only club that would have persuaded him to quit Swansea.See the full content of this document
