THE Health Department has defended its decision to keep 'women in the dark' about substandard breast cancer screening at Barrington's Hospital.

A woman known as Patient A, who had her breast cancer treatment delayed 18 months after a botched diagnosis, asked Health Minister Mary Harney why she waited until August 2007 to suspend services at Barrington's - when the hospital had been struck off the BreastCheck national screening programme in 2005 due to 'quality assurance' considerations.
