'Hello darling, how did you sleep?' I'll ask, and he chatters back about his day ahead at nursery school.

He's four now and learning something new every day. Then I sign off by blowing him a kiss and telling him to be a good boy for his Daddy. It puts my mind at rest to know he's so well and happy. For, you see, since last November I have become a part-time mum - an arrangement that leaves me free to concentrate on my career.

Today, Alex lives with his father, David, in a three-bedroom house in Essex, while I live 220 miles away in Bradford, West Yorkshire, in the twobedroom cottage that the three of us used to call home.
